Practice Expectations
"Practice is for creating within you how you would like the music to sound. "- Menahem Pressler
Practice is required six days per week. Students should keep a practice record (such as in a spiral notebook or 3-ring binder) and bring this to lessons each week for review.
Age | Daily Practice Time |
5-8 | 30 minutes |
9-11 | 45 minutes |
12-13 | 60 minutes |
14-15 | 75 minutes |
16 and over | 90-120 minutes |
Start every practice session by reviewing your practice log from the previous day. Set practice goals with the thought: "What do I want to accomplish today?"
Strive to avoid distractions during practice (phones, friends, pets, snacks)
Parent Responsibilities
Parents with students younger than age ten should attend lessons, take notes, and assist in daily practice. Parental attendance for students eleven and older is optional. The student may record (audio or video) the lesson if that is helpful. Parents can enhance the student's development and experience by providing a quiet, distraction-free practice environment and a well-maintained instrument. Provide access to lots of great music. I will make listening assignments at lessons. Many great recordings can be accessed through Itunes, Pandora, the local library, and on Youtube (parental supervision recommended). Parental encouragement and support will have a positive result on the student's experience.
